Automatic fire suppression system, Sprinkler type

The Sprinkler installation is an automatic water-based system, consisting of sprinkler heads, piping, one or more control panels, a pumping unit, and a water source, which provides protection for property and people against the risk of fire.

The role of a Sprinkler system is to:

  • To detect the onset of a fire.
  • To sound the alarm in the event of early-stage fires.
  • To extinguish or contain the fire depends on the initial design:
    • Control mode: containing the fire until the arrival of rescue teams or firefighters.
    • Extinguishing mode: extinguishing the fire.

The sizing of the Sprinkler system is based on the risk analysis of the area to be protected.

The commonly used reference standards for Sprinkler installations are:

  • The APSAD R1 rule.
  • The NFPA 13 ;
  • The NF EN 12845 +A2 standard ;
  • The CEA 4001 rule(European Insurance Committee) ;

There are also companies or groups that have their own internal standards.
